WALLER, TEXAS — A Waller County grand jury issued a 22-count reindictment last week for Maria Rojas, a 50-year-old midwife practicing in the Houston area. The reindictment includes three abortion-related charges and 19 counts of violating the Medical Practice Act, alleging financial harm.
The updated indictment removes a prior charge of practicing medicine without a license. Rojas was previously indicted on 15 counts, which included performing an illegal abortion. The indictment alleges Rojas knowingly offered medical treatment to patients without a license, resulting in financial harm.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Rojas' arrest in March 2025. Paxton's office accused Rojas of operating a network of clinics and performing illegal abortions in the Houston area. In October 2025, the Attorney General's office announced the arrest of eight employees connected to Rojas' clinics.
Rojas is currently involved in a civil lawsuit filed by the Attorney General's Office in connection to her clinics. The civil lawsuit seeks monetary damages and an order to keep her clinics closed. A Waller County judge issued a temporary injunction in March 2025 to keep the clinics closed. Her civil attorneys have since filed an appeal against this injunction, which is currently pending with the Texas Court of Appeals.
Rojas is the first person to face criminal charges in connection to the case since the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Her attorney, Nicole DeBorde Hochglaube, stated, "There is nothing new on our end." Rojas' next court date in the criminal case is scheduled for August 2026.
No independent assessment of Maria Rojas’s claims was available.
