CHATTANOOGA — Vincent Mayes pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder and received a 12-year prison sentence in connection with a December 6, 2021 shooting into a Chattanooga residence. Mayes also received a concurrent 12-year prison sentence for possession of fentanyl for resale.

The incident resulted in one death and one injury. Prosecutor Andrew Coyle said, "This case stems from a shooting at a residence on Cannon Avenue. Shortly before midnight, the occupants reported multiple gunshots being fired into the home. Most individuals took cover, but one occupant exited the residence and saw two armed black males actively shooting." One occupant returned fire and struck an assailant, Antonio Sparks, who was transported to a hospital in a vehicle and was pronounced deceased.

Authorities identified Sparks and Mayes as the shooters. The vehicle used to transport Sparks was linked to Mayes. Detective Stephen Bulkley of the Chattanooga Police Department Major Crimes Unit led the investigation, identifying the suspects using witness statements, video evidence, social media data, and cellular records. Investigators also established a motive between Mayes and the occupants of the Cannon Avenue residence.

Authorities issued warrants for Mayes. A search of a residence associated with Mayes led to the discovery of fentanyl. The parties involved reached a negotiated resolution shortly before the trial.
