ODENSE — Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during a friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday at Nature Energy Park in Odense. The incident occurred in the 65th minute of the game.

Eriksen clutched his chest before falling to the ground. Medical staff immediately intervened on the pitch, and players from both national teams formed a circle around him while he received attention. He regained consciousness and walked to an ambulance unassisted. The referee suspended the match early with the score at 2-1.

Danish national team doctor Morten Boesen stated, "Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him." Boesen said, "He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident." Radio commentator Mads Thyrested observed the event, saying, "Suddenly, we just see Christian Eriksen fall on the grass."

This event marked the second time Eriksen collapsed during a match in five years. He suffered a cardiac arrest during a Denmark-Finland match in Copenhagen on June 12, 2021, and was subsequently fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator. The Danish Football Association issued a statement: "Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances. The match has been called off." Danish head coach Brian Riemer stated that Eriksen sent a message to his teammates. Eriksen, who is 34 years old, made his 151st international appearance for Denmark during the match against Ukraine. Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the upcoming World Cup. Eriksen played 34 matches for Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga during the 2025-26 season.
