LOS ANGELES — Olumuyiwa Akindahunsi, 29, faces charges for multiple assaults that occurred at the University of California Los Angeles Westwood campus. The incidents took place between approximately 11:30 p.m. on May 28 and shortly after midnight.
Akindahunsi is accused of sexually assaulting two women and attempting to sexually assault a third woman. Two additional women experienced physical assault during the incidents.
The first reported incident involved a student on a campus pedestrian walkway who stated a man used force to take her cellphone before fleeing. Akindahunsi allegedly followed two women into a dormitory building, where he sexually assaulted one of them and physically assaulted the second woman. He then reportedly entered a separate dormitory building and attempted to kidnap a woman in a hallway for sexual assault, but the woman broke free and he fled. Akindahunsi also allegedly sexually assaulted a fifth woman in a dormitory hallway until a resident intervened, causing him to flee.
University police officers located Akindahunsi near a campus parking structure. Multiple accusers and witnesses identified him as the suspect. At the time of his apprehension, law enforcement found Akindahunsi in possession of zip ties, duct tape, and paracord.
Akindahunsi was charged with one count of attempted kidnapping to commit forcible rape. He also faces three counts of assault with the attempt to commit a forcible rape during the commission of a first-degree burglary. Additionally, he was charged with two felony counts of assault likely to produce great bodily injury.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said, "Our university campuses need to be safe and protected spaces for our students, faculty, staff and community — and we will do everything in our power to ensure that this happens." Akindahunsi is not a student and did not have authorization to be on campus. Campus police described him as homeless. Four of the five alleged victims were university students. Jail documentation indicates he is being held without bail, and court documentation does not list an attorney for Akindahunsi.
