LONDON — The comedy series "Alice and Steve" has premiered on Hulu and Disney+. The series, which consists of six half-hour episodes, features Nicola Walker as Alice and Jemaine Clement as Steve, a celebrity hairstylist.
The narrative of the series begins when Steve starts dating Izzy, Alice's 26-year-old daughter. Yali Topol Margalith portrays Izzy. Clement stated, "We meet him in a time in his life where he's open to love to such a degree that he's about to make quite a big mistake." Walker said, "That is the grenade, quite gently, lobbed into all of our lives."
Sophie Goodhart created and wrote the series, which Tom Kingsley directed. Goodhart said, "I love 'War of the Roses.' I love that movie. And so that was a bit of an inspiration when writing." Clement said, "The show is truly about different forms of love, and a big part of it is about platonic love, you know, a friendship." He added, "Some of our favorite scenes to do were the part where we're seeing our friendship at its best and the part when we see it at its worst, (it's) kind of the most fun part."
Walker said, "She feels she needs to protect Izzy from people that have already lived their lives." During a confrontation in the series, the character Alice refers to Steve using an expletive and a derogatory term regarding his relationship with her daughter. Izzy and Steve's relationship begins after an encounter at Alice's residence. Daniel, Alice's husband portrayed by Joel Fry, explores a romantic interest with a coworker. Tyrese Eaton-Dyce portrays Dom, the son of Alice and Daniel. A scene showing characters singing karaoke during filming for the first episode was not included in the final release.
