The Independent appointed Chris Anthony as president of its North America operations, effective June 8. Anthony will oversee the region's full profit and loss statement, which includes content and commercial divisions.
Anthony succeeds Zach Schwartz, who will transition to a role focused on the organization's philanthropy initiatives. Anthony will report to chief executive Christian Broughton, who leads the organization globally. Anthony plans to develop new revenue streams in the finance, travel, and technology sectors.
Anthony stated that the organization is experiencing audience growth in these finance, travel, and technology verticals. He also intends to prioritize creator-led journalism by investing in internal talent and recruiting external creators who have established audiences. Anthony aims to align editorial content with algorithms on platforms such as YouTube Shorts, TikTok, and Instagram Reels.
New commercial initiatives under Anthony will target experiential events including SXSW, Art Basel, and Davos. Anthony joins the organization after a four-year tenure at Gallery Media Group. He previously served as chief revenue officer at the company and chief client officer at Tamara Group. He also held positions at Group Nine, PopSugar, and The Walt Disney Company. The organization discontinued its print publication in 2016.
Anthony said, "The Independent brings a 40-year legacy of trust, infrastructure, and operations. We can lend that to external creators that might come into the fold." He also said, "Most of my career I've always been in places that really needed that startup energy. This is a startup within a large organization, but with a great foundation."
No independent assessment of The Independent’s claims was available.
