THE HAGUE — The Northern Netherlands District Court sentenced three men each to 47 months in prison for stealing a Romanian gold helmet and bracelets from the Drents Museum. The theft occurred in January 2025.

During the incident, the perpetrators breached a museum door using explosives and a crowbar. Security footage released by law enforcement showed three individuals manipulating a museum door with a large crowbar immediately before an explosion.

The stolen items included the Cotofenesti helmet and three golden bracelets, which originated from the Dacia civilization. These artifacts were on loan from Romania to the museum for a temporary exhibition at the time of the theft. The court recorded the insurance value of the stolen artifacts at approximately 5.7 million euros, or $6.6 million.

Two of the three suspects cooperated with prosecutors to facilitate the recovery of the helmet and two bracelets in exchange for reduced sentencing recommendations. One of the three stolen golden bracelets remains unlocated. Museum officials confirmed the recovered bracelets exhibit no damage, while the recovered helmet contains minor damage that is difficult to detect visually.

Romanian authorities have regained custody of the recovered artifacts. The court stated, "The art treasures are part of Romania's past and are of great importance to current and future generations." The court applied reduced sentences to all three convicts to account for the artifact recovery, even though only two suspects participated in the retrieval process. The court withheld the identities of the three convicts in compliance with privacy regulations.
