SAN ANTONIO — Elizabeth Anne Nero, 57, died Thursday after experiencing a medical event in her housing area at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. Onsite medical personnel responded and stabilized her vital signs before she was transported to a hospital.
During transport, her physical condition deteriorated, and she became unresponsive. Emergency resuscitation measures were administered, but Nero was pronounced dead at approximately 5:31 p.m. Her death marks the fourth inmate death at the Bexar County jail in the current calendar year.
Authorities arrested Nero on May 29. Her charges included possession of a controlled substance and failure to identify as a fugitive with intent to provide false information. Bexar County Sheriff's Office officials believe drug dependency or detoxification processes may have contributed to the incident. A final determination will be made by the medical examiner.
The Castle Hills Police Department is leading the investigation into the death. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards was notified of the incident. The Sheriff's Office is conducting a separate internal investigation and stated, "At this time, all policies and procedures appear to have been followed."
No independent assessment of Elizabeth Anne Nero’s claims was available.
