THE HAGUE — Dutch police detained four men in connection with an investigation into allegations they drugged and sexually abused women they knew. Authorities stated the suspects allegedly filmed the sexual assaults and distributed the videos.

Police conducted searches at multiple residences across the Netherlands over two days in late May based on intelligence from authorities in Germany and the United Kingdom. Law enforcement indicated that information points to multiple women possibly being drugged by individuals within their immediate social circles.

Investigators alleged that the men utilized private social media chat groups to circulate images of the abuse and share methods for administering drugs. Officers are reviewing images from phones, computers, USB drives, and SD cards seized during raids at the homes of eight identified suspects to identify potential victims.

The eight suspects targeted in the raids are men ranging in age from 21 to 51. Police recovered drugs and weapons at some of the raid locations. The identities of the detained men were withheld to comply with Dutch privacy regulations.

Potential charges for the suspects include participation in online groups, creating or distributing sexual imagery, and endangering victims through drugging that escalated to attempted rape. Investigators reported that the exact number of victims has not yet been determined. Law enforcement officials stated that further arrests may be made as the investigation progresses.

"But what is clear is that this is a case with an enormous impact," said Milou van der Kolk, a Rotterdam Sexual Crimes Team representative. "As a victim, you may not know what happened to you, because you may have been drugged and were unconscious. The news that your partner or an acquaintance may have drugged you and perhaps even raped you or attempted to do so can turn your life completely upside down."
