BELFAST — Hadi Alodid, 30, was charged with attempted murder and other offenses following a stabbing on Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast on Monday night. He also faces charges of possessing a knife in a public place and making threats to kill a radiographer.
Alodid appeared via video link from custody at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Wednesday morning. He did not enter a plea during the hearing and declined legal representation, appearing with an Arabic interpreter.
The victim, identified as Stephen Ogilvie, believed to be in his 40s, sustained facial cuts, back lacerations, and the loss of his left eye. Police apprehended Alodid a short time after the assault occurred.
Court testimony included a police detective stating that Alodid told emergency responders at the time of his arrest, "I have killed someone. I don't know if they are dead." The court also heard that Alodid told medical staff treating a hand injury, "I will kill you."
Judge Steven Keown denied bail for Alodid, scheduled the next court date for Wednesday, July 8, and addressed recent disorder in the area, saying, "Those taking part in the violence can also expect to go to prison." The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed the attack is not being treated as terrorism-related, and authorities are not seeking additional suspects.
Police indicated that Alodid entered Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland in 2023. He applied for asylum and holds a five-year residency permit. Video recordings of the initial attack were distributed on social media platforms before the court proceedings. Judge Keown commended the emergency services and members of the public who assisted the injured victim.
