SAINT BRELADE — Gabriel Raimondo was elected to the States Assembly at 18 years and 10 days old as an independent candidate representing Saint Brelade. Former President Donald Trump sent a message of congratulations to Raimondo following his election.

Trump told ITV that young people in politics possess great imagination and wished Raimondo luck. Raimondo postponed his A-level examinations in biology, chemistry, and mathematics to participate in the election. He intends to take these exams during the winter.

Raimondo cited the cost of living and various social issues as his motivations for running for office in Jersey. He stated that the cost of living problem in Jersey is worsening, noting that supermarkets are more expensive than in the U.K. and that families are feeling the impact because wages are not much higher. He also noted that many young people leave to attend university in the U.K. and often do not return due to job opportunities.

Raimondo reported campaign-related abuse, including death threats, being spat at while canvassing, and having campaign posters torn down, to the Jersey police. The Jersey Electoral Authority issued a warning to residents to be cautious about the credibility of online posts. Raimondo stated that he did not know if the abuse stemmed from general political disenfranchisement or specific animosity towards him.

The newly elected States Assembly member stated his intention to serve a full four-year legislative term. Raimondo supports promoting the technology, biotechnology, and creative arts sectors in Jersey. He was raised in Saint Brelade; his mother works as a beautician and his father works as a mechanic.

Raimondo remarked on the achievement of his election, stating, "It is very crazy. It makes it feel quite an achievement. It is really good to see Jersey being put on the map." He added, "It showed people do want to see something different. And that is important. I think it is really necessary that we have somebody sitting in our parliament that does represent the younger voice."
