FLORIDA — U.S. Representative Frederica Wilson announced on May 29, 2026, that she will not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2026. Wilson stated her intention to expand her mentorship initiative, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project.
"Today, I announced that I will not seek re-election to Congress, but I am not retiring. My life’s work is entering a new chapter. I will take the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project across America, bringing mentorship, hope, and opportunity to young people in communities throughout our nation." Wilson said.
Wilson first won her term in the U.S. House in 2010, representing Florida's 17th Congressional District. She ran unopposed by major parties in her 2010, 2012, 2016, and 2018 campaigns. Following congressional redistricting, Wilson ran for re-election seven times for Florida's 24th Congressional District.
She won re-election by margins, including 76 percentage points in 2014, 55 percentage points in 2020, 44 percentage points in 2022, and 37 percentage points in 2024. Florida's 24th Congressional District is rated as Solid Democratic by The Cook Political Report and Inside Elections as of June 2, 2026. Sabato's Crystal Ball also rated the district as Safe Democratic on June 2, 2026.
As of May 29, 2026, 69 members of the U.S. Congress had announced they would not seek re-election in 2026. Among the 58 U.S. House members not seeking re-election in 2026, 31 are retiring from public office. Additionally, 16 are running for the U.S. Senate, 10 for governor, and one for state attorney general.
At the same point in the 2024, 2022, 2020, and 2018 election cycles, there were 44, 48, 35, and 51 U.S. House retirement announcements, respectively. Between January 2011 and May 2026, 360 U.S. House members announced they would not seek re-election. January recorded the highest number of House retirement announcements at 62 during this period, while June had the fewest with 15.
