SENEGAL — Ousmane Sonko was re-elected as the head of the PASTEF party on Saturday during a party congress. Sonko, who previously served as the prime minister of Senegal, delivered a speech to party supporters at the event.
Sonko stated that revolutions can be compromised without a clear doctrine and an organization capable of sustaining change. "Revolutions can be hijacked, co-opted or stripped of their substance when they lack both a clear doctrine and an organisation capable of ensuring that change is sustained over the long term. And that is why this congress is historic, two years after we assumed the highest offices of state." Sonko said.
He also indicated that the current revolution faced external interventions. "Our revolution is currently under threat precisely because of these external interventions; not everything that is happening in Senegal at the moment is solely down to internal factors. I will return to this in greater detail later on. But I also want to reassure you that, this time, no attempt to sabotage this revolution will succeed because the people, standing shoulder to shoulder with Pastef, will provide the necessary guarantees so that we can finally liberate our country." he said.
In July 2025, Sonko alleged there was an authority problem within the government. He advocates for a sovereign approach to managing national debt. The PASTEF party holds a majority in the National Assembly, which has the authority to censure the government.
Sonko has indicated an interest in seeking the presidency ahead of legislative elections. Bassirou Diomaye Faye currently serves as the president of Senegal. Local elections in Senegal are scheduled for 2027, and a presidential election is scheduled for 2029.
No independent assessment of Ousmane Sonko’s claims was available.
