TIPTREE — Anthony Canty, 39, died in a hospital four days after a collision involving his bicycle and a black Ford Ka on Maldon Road in Tiptree, Essex. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on May 21.
Following the collision, Mr. Canty was transported to a hospital in serious condition. An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop. The suspect allegedly left the scene after the collision, and was later released under investigation.
An Essex Police spokesman said, "He remains under investigation and our enquiries continue." The spokesman added, "If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us. Please quote 174 of 21 May."
Mr. Canty, a resident of Maldon, Essex, was employed by a building materials supplier at the time of his death. In April, he administered CPR to a police officer who had collapsed from a heart attack on a public bus. The officer was airlifted to a hospital and recovered from the heart attack after five days in intensive care. "Good karma happens to good people," the police officer stated to Mr. Canty.
On May 5, Mr. Canty and Katie Sullivan won a £1 million EuroMillions prize. He and Ms. Sullivan have two daughters. Mr. Canty stated he planned to use the lottery winnings to purchase a house and take his daughters to Disneyland, but intended to continue working. Mr. Canty said, "I called Katie to tell her the good news but she wouldn’t believe me and thought I was winding her up, so I gave her the numbers to check for herself." He added, "I heard her log on and then she started screaming and said, ‘You div, it’s one million, we’re millionaires, you have to come home!’"
