DETROIT — Dylan Larkin, captain of the Detroit Red Wings, has requested a trade from the team. The request follows Larkin's 11 seasons with the Red Wings, during which the team has not qualified for the NHL playoffs since his rookie year.
Larkin, 29, has served as the Red Wings' captain since 2021. The team drafted him 15th overall in the first round of the 2014 NHL draft. His current contract, averaging $8.7 million per season, extends through the 2030-31 season. This contract includes a full no-trade clause for the next two seasons and a modified no-trade clause for the subsequent three seasons.
During the 2025-26 NHL season, Larkin scored 34 goals and recorded 33 assists. He has reached the 30-goal threshold in each of the past five NHL seasons. In the 2025-26 season, the Red Wings finished with a 41-31-10 record, placing sixth in the Atlantic Division. Throughout his 808 regular-season NHL games, Larkin has accumulated 276 goals and 643 total points. He was selected for the NHL All-Star games in 2016, 2022, and 2023.
Larkin has played in five career NHL playoff games. The team's ten-season absence from the NHL playoffs is currently the longest active streak in the league.
Larkin publicly addressed the Red Wings' lack of player acquisitions at the 2025 trade deadline. General manager Steve Yzerman denied reports of a disagreement with Larkin. Larkin is represented by player agent Pat Brisson. The Red Wings acquired defenseman Justin Faulk and forward David Perron ahead of the 2025-26 season. Larkin is from Waterford, Michigan, and played collegiate hockey at the University of Michigan.
