INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS — United Airlines will introduce economy seat beds on more than 200 Boeing widebody aircraft starting in 2027. The airline announced the Relax Row program, which will feature seats with adjustable legrests that flip up 90 degrees to convert into flat beds.
The Relax Row seats can accommodate two adults and a small child when converted to bed mode. Passengers can book the seats as solo travelers, duos, or groups of up to three people. Each Relax Row booking includes a custom-fitted mattress, plush blanket, and two extra pillows. Families who book the seats will receive a stuffed toy and children's travel kit.
United plans to install up to 12 Relax Rows on each aircraft, positioning them between the economy and premium economy sections. The airline expects to outfit more than 200 Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft with the new seats by 2030. "Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them," said Andrew Nocella, United's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.
United is the first U.S. carrier to offer economy beds. Several international airlines already provide similar products. Air New Zealand patented its Skycouch in 2011, which includes a cuddle belt to secure passengers when the seat is in bed mode. Pricing for the Skycouch ranges from a few hundred dollars to over $1,500 depending on the number of travelers, route, and season.
All Nippon Airways offers the COUCHii exclusively on its Airbus A380 aircraft. The product features a row of three or four seats with adjustable legrests that flip into a bed. ANA's pricing ranges from $96 to $540 per segment for three or four passengers during off-peak periods, rising to $2,580 per segment for a single passenger booking four seats during peak months.
Lufthansa provides a Sleeper Row on long-haul flights exceeding 11 hours, priced between $209 and $299 per flight leg. The German carrier's product cannot be booked in advance and is available on a first-come, first-served basis at the airport. Vietnam Airlines offers the Sky Sofa, a three-seat row intended for one passenger, costing between $150 and $650 depending on the route.
United Airlines reported an 11% increase in premium revenue in 2025. The airline offers a premium economy product called Premium Plus, which features a reclining lounger, elevated meals, and a leg and footrest and is more expensive than regular coach.
