BARCELONA — Primavera Sound cancelled performances by Massive Attack, Doja Cat, and Bad Gyal on Thursday night in Barcelona. The cancellations were due to adverse weather conditions.
Earlier on Thursday, the festival also cancelled sets by Alex G and Mac DeMarco. A yellow weather warning was in effect at that time. Rain and wind gusts reaching up to 80km/h (50mph) prevented Alex G from performing, and the conditions also kept Mac DeMarco's technical team from completing stage setup on schedule.
Festival organizers determined they could not guarantee the safety of fans or performers for the late-night shows. Attendees received mobile application notifications labeled 'programme update' that did not contain further scheduling details. Doja Cat addressed fans through an Instagram live stream to announce her performance cancellation.
Primavera Sound organizers said, "We understand and share the frustration and disappointment of the audience." The festival stated in an Instagram post that no serious incidents occurred and that organizers followed all safety protocols.
Alex Milsom, a festivalgoer who works in communications, described a lack of information during the event. "I had absolutely no idea what was going on in the middle of the festival. There were rumours left, right and centre. It is proof that when you do not know what is going on, you breed disinformation because group chats and messages and Instagram comments were the only way I was finding out what was going on," Milsom said.
Milsom stated, "The least they could do is plan for the rain that they knew was coming four days ago." Primavera Sound will refund tickets for Thursday, and details regarding the refund process are scheduled for release on Monday.
