HAMILTON COUNTY — Commissioner Mike Chauncey refused to sign a letter postponing the June 17, 2026, vote on Plan Hamilton. Commissioners proposed rescheduling the vote to July 1, 2026, to ensure full attendance.

Commissioners Geno-o Shipley and Steve Highlander have travel commitments on June 17. Both represent rural districts and oppose Plan Hamilton. Shipley has a family obligation. Highlander has a 50th wedding anniversary trip in Massachusetts.

Commissioner Jeff Eversole advocated for delaying the vote. "This is an important vote. It affects a lot of people in the unincorporated part of Hamilton County. I think we deserve to have all the parties here, especially the two whose districts are most affected." Eversole said. He criticized forcing Highlander to cut his trip short.

County Attorney Janie Parks Varnell said state law requires a formal letter to reschedule a vote. The commission previously approved an initial version by a 6-5 vote and returned it for revisions. The Planning Commission approved a revised version ten months prior to June 2026.

Chauncey said, "We've been waiting for this a really long time. It's just to codify something we've already voted on." He added, "Ya'll have been looking over at me like I'm going to change my mind. I'm not going to change my mind. I'm here on the 17th."

Shipley said he would drive back if necessary. Highlander said, "I'll do my best to get on a plane and fly back if I am able." He added, "Golly bum, I'd hate to divorce on my anniversary after 50 years." Commissioner Lee Helton proposed a procedural vote to reschedule to July 1.
