SAN ANTONIO — Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1533 participated in the 5th Annual VFW Day of Service nationwide effort on May 23. Volunteers from the post partnered with Christian Assistance Ministry to assist individuals and families in San Antonio.
Twenty-six volunteers from the post contributed a total of 222 volunteer hours during May. The volunteers spent 104 hours on-site at the ministry preparing 763 sandwiches and assembling 600 snack bags.
Scout Troop 307 collected 400 pounds of clothing in support of the service project. Volunteers sorted 550 pounds of clothing at the ministry, spent eight hours collecting donated items, and dedicated 110 hours to storing and organizing donations.
The post was established on Nov. 12, 1935. "Our veterans remain committed to serving our community. This project demonstrates what can be accomplished when veterans and community partners work together to support neighbors facing challenges." Suzzie Thomas said. The post focuses on supporting local schools and has donated more than $98,000 in scholarships.
