MEXICO CITY — Former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued a statement criticizing President Trump and alleging a U.S. administration conspiracy to weaken the Mexican left. López Obrador compared the Trump administration's rhetoric to Adolf Hitler's propaganda tactics, specifically referencing rhetoric blaming Mexico for U.S. domestic issues.

U.S. authorities are investigating two Mexican border state governors, members of the Morena party, for possible ties to cartels. The U.S. also recently indicted several prominent Morena leaders, including the governor of Sinaloa state, on drug trafficking charges. Additionally, the U.S. revoked the visas of the two Mexican governors under investigation for potential links to organized crime.

President Claudia Sheinbaum characterized U.S. investigations into Morena officials as politically motivated attempts to undermine her administration. She also accused segments of the American far right of exploiting Mexican issues in advance of midterm elections in both the U.S. and Mexico. Sheinbaum refused a U.S. request to extradite Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, who faces U.S. accusations of protecting the Sinaloa cartel, alongside other Morena officials. Sheinbaum has arrested dozens of local officials, including some affiliated with the Morena party, on charges of wrongdoing.

López Obrador stated he maintained a close working relationship with Trump during his presidency from 2018 to 2024. He attributed the Trump administration's harsher stance toward Mexico to inexperienced political advisors. "Some U.S. officials are plotting to weaken Morena and strengthen the right-wing opposition in Mexico with the idea of once again having a subservient government that is vulnerable, subordinate and loyal to their interventionist designs." The former president of Mexico said. López Obrador publicly declared his full support for Sheinbaum. He left office that year and relocated to a ranch in southern Chiapas state.

No independent assessment of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s claims was available.
