XAISOMBOUN PROVINCE — Mued Duangsomdy, 23, was the first of five gold prospectors to exit a flooded cave system in Xaisomboun province, Laos, after a flash flood trapped them for nine days. He and four other men were prospecting for gold in a cave network in central Laos when the flood occurred.

Duangsomdy appeared muddy and physically unsteady upon his exit. Rescue personnel had made multiple trips into the cave to deliver food and water to the trapped individuals. The men survived in darkness with no additional food, and only small quantities of clean water. "We tried for three days to find ways out. Then we realized we were stuck." Duangsomdy said.

The remaining four men exited the cave independently one day after Duangsomdy left, before divers could retrieve them. Two additional miners who entered the cave before Duangsomdy's group remain missing. Duangsomdy identified the two missing miners as acquaintances and described a cave intersection with three passages.

Chakkrit Taengtang, a rescue operator, reported that an earthquake caused the cave entrance to collapse and flooded the interior chambers. Public officials had previously issued warnings advising against entering the cave system. Rescue officials suspended diving operations due to concerns that heavy rainfall could trap divers inside the cave.

"The mission was already difficult, and now it has become even more challenging." Taengtang said. Dozens of international divers, cave experts, and volunteers joined the rescue operation. Cave diver Josh Richards described the cave conditions as hazardous, specifically citing the risk of rising water in confined passages. "When you don’t have enough room to be able to put your head up straight between the ceiling and the floor and that area then starts to fill with water, I suppose that’s the thing that scares me most." Richards said. "I can tell you that the search crews who are staying on are definitely dedicated to trying to make that a reality." Richards said.

He reflected on his own experience. "I thought I would be dead. I didn’t think there would be people helping us." He said.
