The Storm Prediction Center reported that there were zero tornado fatalities in the United States during May 2026, an occurrence not recorded since 2021. Official data from the federal agency shows a total of 12 tornado deaths across the country from January through May of this year.

The year-to-date figure represents a deviation from recent historical averages. Over the past 10 years, January to May periods typically recorded 37 tornado fatalities. The majority of the 2026 fatalities occurred within the first five days of March, and one additional tornado fatality was confirmed in April.

Evan Bentley, Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the Storm Prediction Center, addressed the historical comparison during a public briefing. "When you look back through the data, there have been plenty of busier years," Bentley said. Meteorological observations recorded by the agency indicate the broader weather pattern during May 2026 was not favorable for tornado formation, which contributed to reduced severe weather activity across the country.

The complete absence of fatalities in May distinguishes the month from typical severe weather seasons. "That is exceptionally rare. The last time that happened was in 2021," Bentley added. The Storm Prediction Center documented that nationwide tornado activity during May 2026 included two tornadoes reaching EF-3 intensity and one tornado rated at EF-2 level.

Long-term tracking of severe weather incidents shows a consistent correlation between tornado strength and mortality rates, with approximately 80% of tornado deaths occurring during events rated EF-3 or stronger. Meteorological records confirm that weaker tornadoes occurred throughout the month alongside the stronger systems. Independent photographic evidence confirms a tornado caused visible property damage in Bogue Chitto, Mississippi, in May 2026, though no casualties were reported from that specific storm system.

The agency compiled location-specific data for all 12 tornado fatalities recorded from January through May 2026. Nine of those deaths occurred inside manufactured homes. Two fatalities were recorded inside vehicles during transit, and a single fatality occurred inside a permanent residential house.
