GATLINBURG — A Buncombe County grand jury indicted 16-year-old Star Grant and 28-year-old Devan Loving on May 8 on charges of first-degree murder and felony conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the May 7 deaths of three family members in Fairview, North Carolina. Both Grant and Loving, who are Buncombe County residents, were each charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony conspiracy to commit murder.
Deputies responded to a welfare check around 7:15 p.m. on May 7 at a home on Ashworth Drive in Fairview, where they found three people dead from gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as 41-year-old Travis Eugene Grant, 42-year-old Kimberly Michelle Grant, and 66-year-old Sharon Hardwood Grant. Star Grant is the daughter of Travis and Kimberly Grant and the granddaughter of Sharon Grant.
Star Grant is being charged as an adult. Devan Loving also faces an additional charge of child abduction. A vehicle associated with Star Grant was found outside a hotel on Ownby Street in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, around 4 a.m. on May 8. About 8:30 a.m. that same day, Gatlinburg police officers and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents entered a hotel room and took Grant and Loving into custody for questioning about the North Carolina deaths.
Investigators from North Carolina and Tennessee collaborated on the case, according to Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller. Authorities have declined to discuss a possible motive or the nature of the relationship between Star Grant and Devan Loving, citing the ongoing investigation. Star Grant's arraignment is scheduled for June 29.
