NEWARK — Roy Price, an EDGE player from Newark (Ohio) High School, committed to play for the Minnesota Golden Gophers after taking an official visit to the University of Minnesota over the weekend. Minnesota is recruiting Price to play the rush end position.

Price said Minnesota’s rush end role requires versatility, including the ability to drop into coverage, cover receivers, set the edge, and pressure the quarterback. "They believe I can do all those things at a high level. I love the challenge of having to be great at multiple things. I believe that with the talent God has blessed me with I’d be a great fit for the position," he said.

Price drew a comparison between Golden Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck and his high school coach, Bill Franks. "Coach Fleck is very similar to my high school Coach Bill Franks. How you do anything is how you do everything. I loved his intensity and attention to detail," he said.

During his visit, Price spent time with Coach Stanard. "I got to know about him, his family and his experience as a coach. He has a lot of time in coaching which I’ll be able to learn from," he said.

Price emphasized that playing for something larger than himself is a priority. He said living and playing with a sense of purpose beyond personal achievement guides his decisions. "I put God first always so having that as part of the belief system was huge for me," he added.

Price is listed at 205 pounds and could play as either a stand-up outside linebacker or an edge rusher. Scouts believe he has the potential to add weight. Earlier this year, he was named MVP of his position group at the Columbus Under Armour camp, where he advanced to the final five through quickness and agility. He had notable matchups with a player named Kalis during that final round.
