AVELLINO — Alessandro Nesta was appointed head coach of Serie B club Avellino on June 28, 2025, replacing Davide Ballardini. Club president Angelo D’Agostino confirmed the appointment, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Italian second-tier side.
Nesta, 50, takes over after Ballardini led Avellino to an eighth-place finish in Serie B following his arrival in February. The club has expressed ambitions of achieving promotion, and D’Agostino indicated that Nesta will be expected to build on recent progress. “We want to achieve further success and he will have to be the architect of that.”
Nesta’s most recent coaching role was at Monza, where he departed after the team was relegated from Serie A. His managerial career also includes stints with Miami FC, Perugia, Frosinone, and Reggiana. While his playing legacy remains widely respected, his coaching trajectory has been more modest. “He has an important past as a player and a slightly less prominent one as a coach, but I believe the best is still to come and I hope he shows his value at Avellino.”
The appointment followed a period of evaluation that considered multiple candidates. “We chose Nesta after a series of evaluations that also included other coaches.” D’Agostino described Nesta as modest and calm, in the same vein as Ballardini, suggesting continuity in leadership style despite the change in personnel.
D’Agostino expressed optimism about the upcoming season, framing it as a pivotal moment for both the coach and the club. “We all believe this will be his year and Avellino’s year.” The statement underscores Avellino’s intent to mount a serious promotion challenge in the 2025–26 Serie B campaign with Nesta at the helm.
