LIVERPOOL — Alexander Isak transferred from Newcastle United to Liverpool in September 2025 for a British record fee of £125 million. The move was finalized on the summer 2025 transfer deadline day after Isak trained away from his Newcastle teammates during the summer to force the transfer.
Isak made 22 appearances in his first season at Liverpool, starting only 13 matches, and scored four goals. He played just 21% of Liverpool's total minutes in the Premier League during the 2025-26 season and did not feature in any matches for four months after suffering a severe fractured ankle and fibula in December 2025. In the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris St-Germain at Anfield, he managed only five touches in 45 minutes.
Prior to his move, Isak had been a key contributor for Newcastle. He scored 27 goals in the 2024-25 Premier League season and netted the winning goal in the 2025 League Cup final. He totaled 62 goals in 109 appearances for Newcastle after joining from Real Sociedad in 2022. His performances helped Newcastle qualify for the Champions League in the 2024-25 season.
Despite limited club minutes in 2025-26, Isak remained active internationally, scoring his 17th goal for Sweden in a 3-1 friendly defeat to Norway in Oslo. He was later named in Sweden’s squad for the World Cup.
"Looking forward to a much better next season," Alexander Isak wrote on Instagram. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said at a recent news conference, "It was a pivotal time for us because Alex was such an important player." He also stated that Isak's departure marked the "end of one type of Newcastle team."
