ISTANBUL — Mason Greenwood is the top transfer target for both candidates in the upcoming Fenerbahce presidential election. Former club president Aziz Yildirim and Hakan Safi are competing for the presidency, with an announcement regarding the election scheduled for Sunday.

An internal investigation by Manchester United concluded Greenwood could not play for the club again, leading to his permanent departure in July 2024. Charges of attempted rape and assault against Greenwood were dropped in February 2023. He signed a five-year contract upon joining Marseille and has three years remaining on that deal.

Greenwood has scored 48 goals in 81 appearances for Marseille, including 16 goals in the most recent Ligue 1 season, finishing joint second in the league’s golden boot standings behind Rennes’ Esteban Lepaul. Marseille’s new sporting director Gregory Lorenzi said last week the club was willing to listen to offers for Greenwood.

It is not anticipated that personal terms would be a problem in any attempt to sign Greenwood. Manchester United included a sizeable sell-on fee in the €31.6 million (£26.6 million) transfer agreement when they sold him to Marseille.

Fenerbahce finished second in the Turkish Super Lig for the fifth consecutive season and will enter the Champions League in the second qualifying round in July. The club has 44,741 members eligible to vote in the presidential election, with the final vote count to occur no later than the general meeting on 6 and 7 June.

Roberto De Zerbi, who managed Brighton & Hove Albion before joining Marseille, was forced to apologise in April for defending Mason Greenwood during his time at the French club.
