LOS ANGELES — Microsoft has delayed the release of its rebooted role-playing game Fable from autumn 2026 to February 2027. The company said the shift was made to give the game “the dedicated moment it deserves.”

The new release window moves Fable out of the crowded holiday season, which will include the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026. Some major game studios may delay their releases to avoid competing with that title during the 2026 holiday period.

Microsoft plans to showcase a “new look” at Fable during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026, at 1 PM ET.

Xbox’s chief content officer, Matt Booty, said in a podcast interview that the June showcase will not include news about Project Helix. “There would be no Project Helix news at the Xbox Games Showcase,” Booty said.

The delay and marketing plans for Fable come as the video game industry navigates broader challenges. Console and gaming hardware prices have increased in 2026, with all three major console manufacturers raising costs. PC handheld makers have also raised hardware prices this year.

The industry continues to experience layoffs in 2026, affecting studios across multiple sectors.

With E3 having been absent for several years as of 2026, events like the Xbox Games Showcase have become central to how companies announce and promote new games. Microsoft’s decision to hold back Fable until early 2027 reflects a strategic recalibration aimed at maximizing visibility and player engagement outside the holiday rush.
