BRIGHTON — James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40. He made the announcement in June 2026, concluding a 24-season career in the Premier League.
Milner broke the Premier League appearance record in February 2026 and played 20 league matches for Brighton & Hove Albion during the 2025/26 season. His contract with Brighton was set to expire at the end of June 2026, and he helped the club qualify for the UEFA Conference League for the 2026/27 season.
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career. I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided,” James Milner said in a statement posted on his social media.
Milner made his Premier League debut for Leeds United at the age of 16 years and 309 days. Over his career, he played for six Premier League clubs: Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton & Hove Albion. He also spent time on loan at Swindon Town early in his career.
He won three Premier League titles—two with Manchester City and one with Liverpool—and claimed the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool in the 2018/19 season. Milner also won two FA Cups and two League Cups during his club career.
Milner represented England 61 times and retired from international football in 2016. He holds the record for most appearances for England’s U21 team with 46 caps. He played in two European Championships and two World Cups for the senior national team.
“I have been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country at two European Championships and two World Cups. But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever,” Milner said.
