LONDON — Bernardo Silva became a free agent in May 2026 after his contract with Manchester City expired. The Portuguese midfielder has expressed a clear desire to sign with FC Barcelona before the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins.
FC Barcelona has not yet committed to signing Silva, as the club must first fulfill several internal conditions. The team needs to clear roster space and secure head coach Hansi Flick’s definitive approval before finalizing any agreement. Flick has voiced concerns about midfield congestion, citing Gavi, Pedri, Fermín López, Dani Olmo, and Frenkie de Jong as players already competing for minutes in that area of the pitch.
There is no internal consensus at FC Barcelona regarding Silva’s potential arrival. While some officials see the move as strategically sound, others remain cautious. FC Barcelona sporting director Deco supports the signing, stating, “He would provide veteran leadership following the departures of Iñigo Martínez and Robert Lewandowski.” Deco, along with club president Joan Laporta, views Silva as an opportunity to acquire world-class talent without a transfer fee.
Silva is reportedly willing to accept a pay cut to fit within FC Barcelona’s wage structure, and his ability to play on the wings offers the team positional flexibility. However, the club does not share Silva’s urgency to complete a deal before the World Cup. The midfielder sees entering the tournament without a club contract as a risk, particularly due to the possibility of injury.
Atlético Madrid is offering Silva better financial terms than FC Barcelona can provide, though Silva’s preference remains Barcelona. His agent, Jorge Mendes, also represents Barcelona player Marc Casadó. The potential signing has drawn comparisons to previous free-agent acquisitions such as Ilkay Gündogan and Iñigo Martínez.
