NEW MARKET — Three people and four animals safely escaped a house fire that destroyed the interior of a home on Indian Cave Road in New Market on May 31. The New Market Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze at 2:04 a.m.
Firefighters arrived to find flames coming through the roof and back side of the house. It took about half an hour to extinguish the main fire, and crews remained on scene until 5 a.m. to put out hot spots.
According to Chief Sammy Solomon, a couple and their granddaughter got out of the house safely with two dogs and two cats. The structure remains standing, but the inside of the home is a total loss.
The fire occurred in Jefferson County. The fire victims are staying with family due to the home's damage. Indian Cave Road was shut down between Susan Drive and Nance Road following the fire, and drivers are asked to take an alternate route.
