PASADENA — Mexico defeated Australia 1-0 in a friendly match at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Saturday. The match was Mexico’s final game in the United States before the FIFA World Cup.
Johan Vasquez scored the only goal of the match in the first half from a corner kick taken by Alexis Vega. Guillermo Ochoa entered the game at the start of the second half, replacing Raul Rangel, and immediately assumed the captain’s armband from Edson Alvarez. Ochoa made multiple saves in the second half to preserve Mexico’s narrow lead.
Stadium officials estimated attendance at approximately 75,000 fans. Supporters traveled from across California to attend the match, contributing to a celebratory atmosphere that included pregame festivities and chants of “Viva Mexico!” throughout the contest.
“I grew up watching it. My dad loved watching it, so I'd always watch it. I've been a Mexican fan since I was a kid,” said Rick Yanez, who traveled from Bakersfield. “Everyone is excited, it's World Cup season. It's going to be a great summer of soccer. We're happy.” Yanez added.
Tania Gonzalez of Santa Clarita said the match offered a moment of unity. “It's rough what we are going through as a country, in the world, and so it's OK to just detach from that and come together and heal part of the community.”
Lawrence Cooper of Santa Clarita praised the environment at the stadium. “The atmosphere is amazing. It's vibrant. Mexico people lovely, friendly, very welcome.”
Luis Chavez played in the match as part of his effort to secure a spot on Mexico’s World Cup roster following an ACL injury. Alvaro Fidalgo also featured despite limited recent playing time with Real Betis. The FIFA World Cup begins next month and will be held in 16 cities across North America, including Los Angeles.
