PARIS — Iga Świątek lost to Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round of the 2026 French Open on May 31, 2026, with a score of 7-5, 6-1. The defeat marked Świątek’s earliest exit from Roland Garros since 2019.
Kostyuk, the No. 15 seed, won the last five games of the match after the second set was tied 1-1. She recorded her 16th consecutive win on clay in 2026 with the victory, having also won the Madrid Open and the Rouen Open earlier that month. The win advanced Kostyuk to her second career Grand Slam quarterfinal and her first at the French Open.
Świątek, a four-time French Open champion, entered the match with a 3-0 career record against Kostyuk and had never previously dropped a set to her. However, Świątek’s forehand produced only 6 winners while she committed 25 unforced errors. She double-faulted multiple times in the first set, including twice in the 12th game, which handed Kostyuk the set. After losing it, Świątek briefly left the court, as is her habit when seeking a reset. During her absence, Kostyuk danced on the clay, took practice serves, and laughed with the crowd.
Świątek turned 25 on the day of the match. She had hired Francisco Roig as her coach approximately two months earlier, following her dismissal of Wim Fisette after a loss at the Miami Open in March. She trained at Rafael Nadal’s academy in Mallorca afterward, with Nadal present for two of her practices. Roig later tore his Achilles tendon during a public practice session with Świątek at the Italian Open in Rome.
"I feel like the decision-making has been better, and that’s an improvement," Świątek said. "He is really a positive person. He can talk to everybody, and he’s really relaxed, but he can easily switch to, you know, being a person that is decisive in the team and also a person that needs to tell me what to do."
"I’m feeling shocked, you know. I’ve never taken a set off her, I still can’t believe it," Kostyuk said. She added, "I feel like I’ve given myself more space to just create something, to challenge my opponents."
Świątek’s overall record at Roland Garros now stands at 43 wins and 3 losses. She had previously won 39 consecutive matches at the tournament after taking the first set, with 37 of those victories coming in straight sets. She has not won a clay-court title since the 2024 French Open.
